Pacific 128 All Out (Leon Yates 32, Martin Dobson 25)

With a team weakened by late withdrawals and injury – stand-in Pacific skipper Darryl Roberts shoes to field first. Exeter’s team included nine students keen to cash in on their opponents lack of firepower – and so it was that after a relatively cautious start against veteran seamer Roberts and young tyro Oliver Haill – the batsmen began to cut loose.

Martin Dobson’s introduction to the attack soon brought dividends when he bowled Holman (no relation!) for 45. However this only succeeded in bringing the aggressive Newman to the crease to greet Adrian Duthie’s introduction to the attack. 2 overs and 41 runs later – Duthie was withdrawn!

Newman eventually fell for a blistering 67 – bowled by the returning Roberts – and the innings closed on 246 when Lawrence reached his unbeaten chanceless century – although he may have been fortunate to survive a direct hit run out attempt from Ben Hardisty a little earlier.

Duthie’s day – which included a 500 mile round trip – went from bad to worse when he ran himself out needlessly for 4. With other Ben Hardisty also going for 4 and the clearly still injured Jim Davies’ return blighted by a Golden Duck – when he foolishly walked for what may well have been a bump ball – Pacific’s reply was in tatters at 10 for 3.

Wiley Victorian veteran Leon Yates responded with some judicious hitting in partnership with local keeper Dan Fitton. Their stand of 42 was broken with departure of Yates for 32 – and the experienced John Hill soon followed him for a disappointing 4. When Fitton fell for 14 – all seemed lost at 63 for 6.

The tail wagged somewhat – John Warner digging in for 38 minutes in scoring 4 – and Martin Dobson (25) and Oliver Haill (22) launching a brief counter attack. But after striking a sweet six Haill was caught behind square and Dobson undone by a bouncer from spinner Young. This left skipper Roberts and wizened old pro Pete Hollman (strangely batting at 11) to see out the final 7 overs – but sadly Roberts captain’s innings came to an early end as he aimed an expansive drive and was bowled for 5 – leaving Hollman 0 not out.

“Not a good start to tour!” said a deflated Darryl Roberts later. “We were well beaten.” he added.

MOM – Martin Dobson – 25 runs and a wicket.

Packing the Kit – Adrian Duthie – 2 overs for 41, ran himself out and had a 500 mile round trip.
