Pacific 226 all out off 59.1 overs (Wiehahn 36, Rajaraman 36, Cowling 30, Reeve 2-36, Fitch 2-36)
Crossbats 56 all out off 25.2 overs (Carter 19, Gleadow 5-29, Cowling 2-4, Rademaker 2-16)
Skipper John Hill was delighted to see a full side ready for the 11am start time and decided to take the attack to Crossbats, batting after winning the toss. Vaibhav Puri (29) and Guy Wiehahn (36) started solidly, moving the score onto 55, before Puri fell leg before wicket. Jim Davies came to the crease, a large partnership looking on the cards until the Welshman pulled a calf pushing for a quick second. His retirement brought Braden Grigg into the game.
A succession of sweetly timed boundaries showed Grigg (20) near his best, but his cameo was cut unfortunately short as Crossbats spinner, Searson, deflected a straight drive from Wiehahn onto the stumps. Wiehahn was soon to follow, as the ball trickled onto his stumps from a forward defensive. Martin Cowling and Jai Rajaraman built a solid partnership, Cowling especially taking the attack to the Crossbats bowlers before falling for 30.
Continuing the trend of the innings, the rest of the Pacific batsmen got starts, but no-one managed to get settled. It was left to skipper Hill and the returning Davies (requiring a runner following his earlier strain) to stretch out the Pacific innings. Hill was last out with the score on 226 off 59.1 overs.
After the change of innings, new ball bowlers Kurt Rademaker and James Gleadow immediately found the line and movement for success. Rademaker made the first breakthrough, getting the wicket of Kirkwood caught behind. Gleadow soon followed this up with a safe catch from Hill to remove Wright, and clean bowling Fitch to bring tea.
After tea, Rademaker and Gleadow both continued where they left off, trapping Carter (the only batsman to reach double figures with 19) and Searson with little added to the Crossbats score. Rademaker (10 ovrs, 2 mdns, 2 for 16) was given a rest after his sterling work, Cowling being brought into the attack.
Any hope Crossbats may have had of exploiting the change bowling was quickly shattered, as Cowling took the wickets of Lips and Jones for single figure scores. Gleadow continued his fine line from the other end, taking two more wickets to bring up his first five wicket haul for the club. All that was left was for Grigg to finish the job, bowling Drior to complete the Pacific victory by 170 runs, Crossbats finishing on 56 all out.
MOM - James Gleadow - First Pacific five wicket haul
PS from Alan Carter "Rob sorry we didn’t put up much of a performance last week, you might like to pass onto your team that our opener coming in at number 11 due to a hurting hand (we all thought he was wimping) was actually broken. Can’t rember which batsmean did it but it was middle order somewhere."
