Pacific v Chats Palace  Regular fixture < previous | next >
Sunday 7-Oct-2007 12 noon at Spring Hill
Won 124 Runs

Pacific enjoyed a rare double winning weekend on what seemed like another perfect Autumnal day. Landmarks were reached & records threatened when the visitors first trip to this pleasant yet urban setting set up a 2nd win in consecutive days to get the month off to a winning start.

Being inserted by Sirus, the Palace Captain after winning the toss seemed exactley the right thing to do. The outfield was still heavy with dew & the ball was swinging & seaming as shown by the opening Chats' bowlers Darren & Ned, both of whom beat the bat frequently & they soon snapped up the wickets of the in form Rob Bastin & Matt Holiday (despite scoring his 1000th run for the club) to leave the Islington side on 24-2. After the interval, the home side went at the target with purpose & some sloppy fielding & inconsistent bowling simply underlined what everyone felt - this was a total that no one would overtake. James Gleadow did pick up 3 wickets including that off Gary Horsman & Captain Sirus which he rightfully celebrated with exuberance. He'd not had the best of luck lately & although this wasn't his best spell he was bowling wicket taking deliveries. Nick Fuller supported ably & Aroon Korgoankar - another who had bowled well of late with less reward - too found that wickets were easier to come by despite a drop off in consistency.

Darren Temperny varied everything & 1 extra quick delivery surprised not only the batsman. Soon Darren too was amongst the wickets & when Hollman came on to break a beligerent last pair, 2 balls later it was all over. The winning margin may have been great but all credit to Chats whio had given it an excellent go & played their full part in an enjoyable match perhaps rueing what might have been if Jon Webley hadn't notched up his 2nd centry of the season thereby reaching the milestone of 1000 runs for the season, & 1 of those early chances were taken.

XI:-Rob Bastin, Joe Bennett, James Gleadow, Matt Holliday, Peter Hollman, Steve Lay*, Jon Webley, Aroon Korgaonkar, Nick Fuller, Kurt Rademaker & Darren Temperny 12ths Alistair Pritchard & Phil Egan
