A six wicket haul for Radlett youngster Gray finished off a stuttering Pacific run chase, as Radlett clinched a 56 run win with the fourth to last ball of the game. Earlier, the Pacific change bowlers had restricted Radlett to 212-9 on a lively but even batting track.
Radlett 212-9 off 44 overs (Hayes 55, Ingram 28, Mundie 3-21, Wilkinson 3-36, A Roberts 2-34)
Pacific 156 all out off 45.3 overs (Rees 53, Duthie 28, Gray 6-62, Ingram 2-30)
Radlett started their innings in bright fashion, making the most of some wayward bowling from the Pacific openers, especially Rob Bastin struggling to find his line. A touch of magic was required for the breakthrough, Pacific skipper Nigel Wilkinson taking a blinder at gully off the bowling of Shayne Rees to remove Dexter.
With Bastin rested, Wilkinson brought himself into the attack and found a much more accurate line, slowing the scoring rate while Rees continued to probe from the other end. Then three wickets fell to Wilkinson as Radlett looked to push the scoring rate on. Radlett number 5, Hayes, began to score freely as Rees was replaced by Pete Hollman and subsequently Shane Mundie, with Wilkinson continuing to bowl a good line.
Mundie brought about the beginning of the end for the Radlett push, taking three wickets with his cutters. Wilkinson removed himself from the attack to bring on the off spin of Allan Roberts with immediate effect, Hayes belting the first ball down the throat of Adrian Duthie at deep mid-wicket for 55. Another wicket from Roberts and some tidy overs lead Radlett to declare at tea on 212-9 off 44 overs.
The Pacific reply began well, with Duthie and Hollman looking safe, until a fantastic reflex catch at gully removed Hollman. Duthie was joined by Steve Lay and both continued the good start, moving the score onto 51 before Lay fell to the Radlett youngster Gray's leg spin. A collapse was in the air, as Mundie, Duthie (28) and Matt Callender all fell with the score on 56.
Rees came to the crease with Pacific on the ropes, but steady batting on his part, supported by some good play by the lower order (notably Roberts with 15), took the game towards a hard earned draw. Rees had passed his fifty and been joined at the crease by skipper and number 11 Wilkinson, as Pacific looked to survive the remaining overs of the day.
The draw was favourite as Gray bowled the last over (finishing with great figures of 19.3 ovrs, 3 mdns, 6 for 62). Defending the first two balls, Rees looked to complete the rear guard action, only to be bowled by the fourth to last ball of the game. Pacific finished on 156 all out off 45.3 overs. All that was left for the shattered Pacific players was to complement the Radlett team on a fine performance, and drown their sorrows at the Radlett CC bar.
