The Captain Reports'And so the season got off to a customary win in the darkening hours of April 2006 for Pacific against Norfolk and Chance.
Essentially this was a touch harder than a walk in Victoria Park, but only due to some (ahem) contentious umpiring decisions and a couple of dropped catches. But leather jackets aside, Pacific got off to a comfortable winning start. Some solid bowling by Gleadow, Allum and Chandler, allowed Long (3 for 7) and McKillop (2 for 3) to wrap things up nicely to leave Pacific needing 79 to win.
Charles and Webley opened the innings and flashed and nurdled their way to within touching distance, until Berry picked-up Charles at point for 19. This left Webley needing 4 for his 50 which he grafted to with ease, raised his bat and retired to the ice bath and rapturous applause that awaited. This therefore left Long and Chandler to see things through with a partnership of 11. James was the pick of the Norfolk bowlers but went to the bar with 4 overs for 24 to his name.
Albeit an easy win, things will get harder when the Cup draws upon Pacific. However, it's nice to be eased into the mania of 16 over madness.'
Pitch no 3. VIII:- Conrad Chandler*, Alex McKillop, Adam Long, Richard Gaffin+, James Gleadow, Paul Charles, Rob Allum & Jon Webley.
