Pacific's annual pool tournament was held at Rileys at Victoria on Thurs 5 March, with defending champion Stu Hopper competing in a double round robin tournament with Steve, Toby, Webbo and Phil. The round robin was followed by a short knockout phase. The early running was with Steve with some clinical potting around the black spot, and Toby also showing some good early form. Webbo, Stu and Phil played a few good pots but showed no consistency. Stu and Webbo both tried to find some form by striking the balls harder and succeeded only in forfeiting frames by potting the black ball out of turn. It ended up a long drag to complete the round robin with some slow and safe play and not much to entertain the crowd, although the arrival of the pizza did raise the spirits and provided a welcome distraction.

The first semi-final was Steve facing Toby who had seemingly kept his powder dry for the knockout phase, in imperious form took things to another level and ended up the convincing winner, seven-balling his hapless opponent. The second semi-final saw Webbo facing Stu which turned out to be a scrappy affair with neither player really doing enough to close out the frame. Finally it was Stu who put Webbo through to the final with black and white potted in opposite corners.

The final was another scrappy game with Toby unable to sustain his semi-final form and Webbo still looking to find any form and wondering how he’d even managed to get into the final. The sign of a good player though is being able to grind out a result which is exactly what Webbo did and he ended up the deserved winner with a decent finish on the black to win the final 2-1.

[A decent finish on the black!? Which game were you watching, Stu!? Ed]
