Pacific bowling legend John Baglivi emerged as a hot favourite to claim the darts title during the group stage of the competition held at the Wenlock Arms last night. A field of 8 was whittled down to four semi-finalists – who will have to re-convene at a later date to fight it out for the title.

Baglivi - a four time previous winner of the trophy and regular league darts player – emerged as the top seed and must be the man to beat. Only a halved match with another multiple previous winner – John Hill – prevented him from claiming a clean sweep on the night.

However it was Hill – who qualified in second place – who claimed the honour of the top scores on the night – a very creditable 125 and 123 with three darts.

Lowest score with three darts was a miserable 1 from newcomer Oli Haill – who never the less overcame old timers Peter Hollman and Steve Lay to finish 6th.

Hollman – despite a dramatic (if not to say unexpected!) double 3 to see off Jim Davies – had to content himself with the Wooden Spoon as he propped up the table with only 1½ points.

Matt Holliday grabbed a deserved third place with some consistent performances. Last year’s runner-up Davies sneaked into fourth place – and the last semi-final spot - by virtue of a victory over Rob Bastin – as both players finished on 3 points.

It is hoped that the semis and final will be played at the same venue in the next month or so.
