Too Strong for the Weasals
Pacific v New Barbarian Weasals at Norbury Power league  Sun 20-Aug-2006 at 2pm
Won 20 runs

Pacific arrived at an overcast ground in Norbury to find no sign of an opposition or a prepared wicket for us to play on. We all had a bowl at Luke Hollman before the opposition were found. We also discovered we were one short as debutant Tony Phillips had gone to the wrong ground.

Webley lost the toss having agreed to a 35 over a side game and we were inserted on a very green strip. McKillop (42) and Bird (13) gave us a solid start against some accurate bowling although they benefited from three dropped chances before Bird fell with the score on 48.

McKilllop had brought two right footed trainers to play in and had to borrow a left foot trainer that was too big for him. There was intermittent heavy rain that caused brief stoppages throughout the innings. Rademaker and Webley (24) played some good shots in their middle order cameos but both picked out the fielder who could catch before they could dominate. Bennett went first ball despite two fielders colliding whilst going for the catch. McDonald (26) worked the ball well on his first game for ten years and all the tail contributed some runs to propel the total to 160/9.

The tea was mixed (too improvised, not enough drink but decent sandwiches).

James Smith and Gleadow opened the bowling in miserly fashion as NBW could not get any momentum going. Smith was rewarded for his efforts (he bowled with good pace and venom) with two wickets including the dangerous looking left handed opener. Webley and McDonald replaced the bowled out openers and bowled good lines that had them claim a wicket each and cause much play and missing by the batsmen. Then Webley bowled a ball a mile down the leg side that Moses Hutchinson-Pascal dived to retrieve. Unfortunately in doing so he deflected the ball into his glasses which broke and sent glass into his eye and cut his nose. Play was stopped whilst pieces of glass were removed from his eye and Phillips took over the gloves (doing a solid job although he did drop one).

The game seemed to be drifting to a Pacific win as NBW struggled to get some tight bowling away. Moses bravely returned to the field and did well although he did drop a hard chance later on. However, Dyer and Omar put on 47 for the 6th wicket quickly to bring some life into the game and fifty were needed off the last five. Rademaker was brought on and bowled a very controlled three overs that snuffed out the glimmer of hope for NBW.
