Squash Final 28/2/06. Steve Emmins beat Peter Hollman. 9-7 10-8 6-9 2-9 9-1

The 2 finalists returned to resume the contest on Court 6 at The Sobell. Steve’s keep the oppo waiting tactics – he blamed traffic & then the 1st ball burst in the warm up – did not have an immediate effect on his opponent who won the warm up game & the right to serve first. However, Steve, sensibly paced himself & soon went 2-0 thanks to some solid serving & by keeping his famous cool on the key points.

Pete had to dig deeper & to probably his own surprise, momentum shifted & points were bossed by Pete & uncharacteristic mistakes were made by Steve. Soon it was 2-2 & with less than 4 minutes left, Pete offered a deferral which was declined. Again, ascendancy shifted & as Pete was playing for time & a draw & so a rematch so Steve became more & more clinical. 6.04 pm & still no knock. Some more sublime stroke play & finishing from Steve & it was all over.

As the players left the court the hallway clock read 6pm exactly 4 minutes slow! Nevertheless the best player had won. Steve deserved to win over the 5 games & so maintain a 4 year winning streak & by beating everyone else in the tournament all of which are younger. Pete was happy just to have run the favourite close & maybe look to take the next step up next year.
