Pacific v President's XI at Wray Crescent  Sat 03-Oct-1998
Lost by 5 wkts

Despite the early loss of undoubtedly Pacific's player of the season,John Baglivi for a duck & David Murray (1) to opening bowlers Jason Gannon & Matthew Sanderson, Pacific recovered from 8-2 to 109 -3 .

Pcc : 137-10. J Green 55 P Hollman 28 Javed 11-1-34-4 A Dunning 10-2-33-4
PXI : 140-5. S Ahmed 84*. J Baglivi 6.3-0-32-3.

Captain Peter Hollman (28) continued his recent fine form & left hander John Green (55) who scored the shot of the day skimming the pavilion roof with a square drive for 6 off Sanderson.Thereafter, however, it was the same Pacific batting story of the 1998 season, when despite an excellent batting order on paper, Pacific then lost 7 wickets for 28 runs. Vice President & Captain Craig Jones, in the absence of the otherwise engaged President, Tim Mileham, was delighted with off spinner Javed's (Mola Jutt CC) haul of 4-34 & Victoria Lounge's Alistair Dunning's 4-33 who consolidated the Presidents XI position of strength. Opening the batting, Shakil Durrain (Mola Jutt CC) who is more used to facing high quality bowling in the Sri Lankan League was ruthless, particularly against Ian Lay 3-0-33-0 but Ian was unlucky to see him crucially dropped at deep mid wicket by David Murray to complete a disappointing performance for the latter. Man of the match Shakil (84*) was dropped again after he had completed his 1/2 century & despite John Baglivi & Mike Alexander picking up 5 wickets between them, Pacific were left to rue the chance he had given when on 8 & the earlier disappointing batting display.

Craig struggled to hide his glee & Peter Hollman agreed that the better side had won ."I was particularly pleased that the game had gone ahead & all the Invitees seemed to enjoy getting an unexpected bonus of 1 more game before they hang their boots up until next April."

SUMMARY 1998 Season

P30 W7 L10 D13.
An unremarkable season in terms of results. Worst in terms of wins since 1984(16) but only since 1986 (6) had we lost less. This coupled with last place in Division 2 of VPCCL.However, this is still overshadowed by the record 16 games cancelled due mainly to the poor weather. Another season of consolidation lies ahead in 1999.
