Garfunkel in rearguard action
Pacific v UCS Old Boys at Eve Field  Sun 01-Jun-1997

For the 2nd successive week, Pacific were frustrated by a final wicket stand & so deprived of a richly deserved win.

P : 183-10. D Murray 65, T Mileham 35, F Baglivi 27. Walker 8-1-30-2
UCS OB : D Garfunkel 35. M Alexander 15-1-49-6

On a flat track, Nigel Wilkinson, who went into the game carrying shin & back injuries & probably should not have played, won the toss & opted to bat but 24-3 was a stumbling start due to Conrad Baron's fine flighted though accurate slow medium, was righted by the men in form - David Murray & Tim Mileham. The latter controversially given out caught behind. to ad to his indignity, he later pulled a hamstring keeping in an attempt to reach a catch successfully.

Wickets fell regularly to 6 of the 7 bowlers used, with only Doran Garfunkel missing out. A 10th wicket stand of 36 between Nigel & Frank Baglivi gave the former the total he was seeking. Conditions became increasingly blustery, the bails were dispensed with & 2 sight screens were blown over. Nigel even claimed that he had been blown backward in his delivery stride. He moved the bowlers around & the greatest beneficiary was Mike Alexander claiming a career best analysis. Only as he tired did Pacific's prospects of a win diminish. Doran Garfunkel top scored as wickets fell at the other end but Mike was the man of the match having turned around the game as UCS were 64-1 giving Pacific the best of the draw.
