Agony For Smudger As Vanderpump's Efforts in Vain
Pacific v Broxbourne at Broxbourne Sports Club  Sun 24-Sep-2006 at 1pm
Lost 2 runs

Broxbourne CC extended their winning run to 16 games on the bounce but Pacific lead by Tim Vanderpump's sumptous 89 ran them mighty close. It was anguish for James Smith who needed 3 from the last ball to win, 2 to tie, but Stone kept his nerve & Smithy inside edged onto his stumps to complete the agony

The Scorer takes up the story "Pacific arrived at Broxbourne to find their opponents champing at the bit to get the game underway on a fine Sunday afternoon.  However, the late arrival of four Pacific players held up proceedings for twenty minutes.  Webley won the toss and opted to field.

Gleadow and Brown bowled excellent opening spells, found some movement and reduced Broxbourne to 43/4.  After that Wright, eventually bowled by a beauty from Webley, and then Hardy, played and missed several times against James Smith, played some thumping shots to wrestle back the iniative and Broxbourne looked on top at 140/5.  After Webley snared Hardy the Broxbourne innings declined to 191/9 as Davies brought himself on to snare the tailend bunnies as usual.

Tea was the usual good Broxbourne tea. [Bit too many calories though. Ed]

The Pacific reply got off to a bad start when McKillop fell for a duck but Steve Lay and Vanderpump took the score to 47.  After Steve departed caught behind Vanderpump and Webley struggled against disciplined bowling.  Webley was missed twice in the slips before giving a return catch when on 21.  The struggles of that partnership and Hollman's [comical] duck caught in the gully left Pacific 90/4 needing to score at 8 an over.

Vanderpump and Simon Smith, who scored his PB with 13, resurrected the innings against the part-time bowling with a stand of 60.  Unfortunately Osman returned to the attack and removed both.  Vanderpump had played a wonderful innings for his 89 (full of his usual great running and upright power) but failed to see the innings through again as, like against Strongroom, he missed a straight one in the gathering gloom.  Davies did not stay long and that left Emmins and James Smith with a hard ask in the last overs.

They ran well and James Smith hit some smashing shots to leave the situation as 6 needed off the last over. Stone kept his nerve, the umpire bottled it with regards calling wides and James Smith could not score the needed three of the last ball as he edged one on."

XI:-Jim Davies*, James Gleadow, Peter Hollman, Steve Lay, James Smith, Jon Webley, Jon Brown, Steve Emmins+, Alex McKillop, Simon Smith & Tim Vanderpump. Standbys:- Lahri Mohammed & Moses Hutchinson-Pascal.
