Arish's Game
Pacific v Victoria Park Juniors at Victoria Park Pitch 1  Wed 28-Jun-2006 at 6.30pm
Lost 17 Runs

With both teams already knowing which division they had qualified for, (VPJ in 1, & Pacific 2), this was pretty much a dead rubber. VPJ Captain, Arish, won the toss & opted to bat. Arish then scored a quick fire 55 before compulsory retiring & saw his side to 74-2 at the half way stage.

Opening bowlers Jonathan Campbell, on his 1st 2006 appearance & Shane Mundie both bowled tight & the field led by an excellent debut from keeper Aaron Walder, were regularly employed, but Arish had too much talent as he single handedly built a strong foundation with his chanceless strokeplay & shot selection.

Following his retirement, the run rate slowed as Aroon Korgaonkar with his left arm chinamen took control taking 3 wickets & ably supported by Simon Smith's best spell of medium seam up to date.

Indeed, Pacific's control was reasserted to such a degree that the dilemma was whether to let the lower order struggle or to maintain momentum. It was never a serious debate but ultimately Arish's 20 runs upon his return was the difference.

Pacific's batting was spearheaded by fine knocks from Jonathan Campbell & Tim Vanderpump especially when together but a misjudged pull from the latter & a catch at fly slip to the former left Pacific's chase more in hope than in expectation as the light faded.

Aroon's run out on the penultimate ball was already in vain once Simon Smith had failed to make contact with the 1st 3 balls of the final over. Pacific were left to contemplate what a wonderful innings Arish had played & one scorer in particular was even impressed by his impeccable manners.

As Pacific split up to head off to either the pub or the curry house, Level 2 coach Arish sat his charges down in circle for the de-brief. The matches will certainly be stiffer in their challenge for their 1st league championship but Pacific's stand captain wishes such a sporting & friendly side all the best in their quest.

Stand in Captain Peter Hollman said "we always seemed to score a run or 2 behind the required rate, never got the big over & so failed to catch up. We did v well keeping them down though - apart frm 2 dropped catches ground fielding was superb & their captain was the difference."

VIII :- Peter Hollman*, Jonathan Campbell+, Tim Vanderpump, Simon Smith, Shane Mundie, Aroon Korgaonkar, Sammy Purcell & Aaron Walder.
